I'm so envious—these "ladies" actually built their house right in the middle of an orange grove!
"Harmony between heaven and earth, unity of all things—this is the core philosophy behind the 'He Cheng' brand. As the Qian卦 in the *I Ching* states: 'Through the Dao of Qian, all things transform, each fulfilling its destined role; preserving perfect harmony ensures enduring virtue.' The name 'He Cheng' draws inspiration from the character 'He' in 'Baohe Taihe,' symbolizing how every element finds its rightful place, thriving harmoniously within the grand tapestry of heaven and earth. It embodies nature's cyclical process of growth, interdependence, and renewal—leading ultimately to a state of profound, everlasting balance and fulfillment. After all, agriculture and nature are deeply interconnected: farming relies on vital natural resources like soil, water, and climate, while simultaneously shaping and influencing the environment itself. Most agricultural practices today revolve around nurturing and balancing crops with these essential elements."

How did the early 2024 snowfall and freezing rain affect Orange?
Agriculture is an industry that literally "depends on the weather"—and there’s no exaggeration in that. Every farmer eagerly hopes for favorable conditions, with ample rainfall and just the right amount of sunshine. Yet, more often than not, nature doesn’t cooperate as planned, and unpredictable weather patterns frequently pose challenges to agricultural production. Having spent over a decade navigating the ups and downs of farming, Hecheng people know all too well the frustrations these weather-related hurdles can bring. Looking at the start of 2024, it seems Mother Nature hasn’t been particularly kind this year. February brought prolonged periods of snow, ice, freezing rain, and extreme cold, while March continued with chilly temperatures and persistent rainy days—both of which have created significant obstacles for the healthy growth of Hecheng’s citrus trees. Typically, navel orange trees have limited cold tolerance, able to withstand only brief exposure to low temperatures. However, when faced with severe cold below -3°C, their resilience simply isn’t enough to protect them fully.

Hong Kong Brand Board honors "He Cheng," a rising star brand, as its legacy lives on—bringing the vibrant aroma of oranges to Hong Kong.
Recently, "He Cheng" proudly received the Rising Star Brand Award from the Hong Kong Brands Council, recognizing our dedication and innovative approach. This prestigious accolade underscores the brand’s growing popularity in the Hong Kong market, while also highlighting its emerging presence—both locally and on the global stage. Established in 2018, "He Cheng" has not only embraced the vision of "oranges grown by Hong Kong people" by meticulously managing every step of the process, from orchard establishment and independent seed planting to careful harvesting and seamless packaging for shipment. But beyond that, the brand embodies a unique philosophy of "harmony between nature and humanity," fostering a self-sustaining ecological cycle system. At our farm, we carefully select only the finest crops for sale, while repurposing the surplus to nourish the land and maintain a balanced, sustainable ecosystem.

With Orange Orchard: Low-Carbon, Green, and Circular Agriculture
Last year, we published an article on Friends of the Earth Hong Kong highlighting how we prioritize environmental protection and sustainability. Although we already hold various certifications—such as organic food and eco-friendly farming—we felt our achievements still lacked sufficient quantification. This November, however, we finally received a verification statement from BSI regarding our carbon footprint, confirming that for every 1 kg of oranges produced, our orchard generates just 0.0793 kg of CO₂ equivalent. This makes us one of the lowest-carbon orange farms globally. In just a few short years, "Zhanxiang & Orange" has quickly become well-known in Hong Kong. Thanks to visits by friends and media coverage of our orchards, more and more people are not only learning about us but also coming to appreciate our commitment to sustainability.
